Absolute Bangers - Video Games

I love video games, sure wish I could play them more often though.

Track Name Composer Game Platform Commentary
Title Theme Kenji Yamamoto Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Nintendo GameCube I have VERY STRONG MEMORIES of this song because it was the first video game I ever preordered and I wore the pre-order bonus shirt to DEATH, and it still fuckin makes me nut.
Fly Octo Fly/Ebb and Flow Toru Minegeshi Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion Nintendo Switch God this is SUCH a great final boss theme, I fucking love Off the Hook so much.
Lonely Rolling Star Yoshihito Yano Katamari Damacy Sony Playstation 2 Easily the best song off of the original Katamari Damacy by leaps and bounds (Sorry Katamari on the Rocks stans)
Memories of Green Yasunori Mitsuda Chrono Trigger Super Nintendo Entertainment System It's so hard not to put the entire Chrono Trigger soundtrack on here I tell you what.
Let's Go Away Takenobu Mitsuyoshi Daytona USA Arcade DAYTONAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Sweden C418 Minecraft PC Even though Minecraft is basically the biggest game of all time at this point, this track still harkens back to a day when the funny block game still had endless potential
Terran 1 Glenn Stafford StarCraft PC This song is quintessentially StarCraft. It tells you everything you need to know about the Terran race while still sounding reminiscent of the composer's earlier work on the first two WarCraft games. (As far as I'm concerned there is nothing after WarCraft II and its expansion.)
Devil's Call in Your Heart Taro Bando F-Zero X Nintendo 64 One of the only examples of Death Metal in a Nintendo game you'll hear aside from whatever was going on in Bowser's Fury
Heavy Machinery/Castle Machinery Josh Mancell Crash Bandicoot Sony Playstation Out of an entire soundtrack that sounds like Devo making music for Loony Tunes (Which it kinda is), this is the most Devo sounding
Beach Tim Follin Plok! Super Nintendo Entertainment System Tim Follin is literally a wizard.
Gehn's Theme Robyn Miller Riven: The Sequel to Myst PC This is the most evil woodwind I have EVER heard.
Adventuring/Town Exploration 1 Rob King, Paul Romero, and Steve Baca Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven PC Tough not to put the whole soundtrack here, but this is a great example of the soundtrack's forlorn nature, the atmospheric sounds are a nice touch.
Delfino Plaza Koji Kondo Super Mario Sunshine Nintendo GameCube The song IS Super Mario Sunshine to me
Overworld Theme Koji Kondo Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) Nintendo Entertainment System JOHN MADDEN JOHN MADDEN JOHN MADDEN AEIOU AEIOU AEIOU
The Tower Robyn Miller Myst PC I'd say this is one of the more MYSTerious tracks on the soundtrack (Get it?) and I love a good Synth Flute
Mysterious Age ~ Dark Ruins Soichi Terada Ape Escape Sony Playstation Despite not actually playing in any of the games Japanese themed levels, this IS probably the closest sounding to anything off of Sumo Jungle GRANDEUR
24 Hour Cinderella ZENTA Yakuza 0 PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One I simp hard for Goro Majima
I am the Chowder Man Hot Dad Hypnospace Outlaw PC Got stuck in my head more times than I care to admit
Surface of SR388 Daisuke Matsuoka Metroid: Samus Returns Nintendo 3DS This might be cheating but I think this might be the most well executed of the remixed tracks from Samus Returns
Dynapolis Hiroshi Okubo Ace Combat 2 Sony Playstation Another case where I could a whole game's OST on this list but Dynapolis gets a spot because it's just so fucking DIFFERENT from the rest of the soundtrack
Dragon Roost Island Kenta Nagata The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Nintendo GameCube A song so outstanding they remixed it for Breath of the Wild
The Concept of Love Hideki Naganuma Jet Set Radio Future Xbox UNDERSTAND UNDERSTAND
Aniki Strike Malignant Festival Taku Iwasaki Ai Cho Aniki PC-Engine/Turbografx-16 An early example of Taku Iwasaki putting his whole ass into a project, he would later go on to compose for Gurren Lagann, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and Shin Kamen Rider. Ai Cho Aniki is the manliest game of all time.
Harvest Dawn Jeremy Soule The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 Will forever be associated with awkward NPC Dialogue, sorry Jeremy.
Guardian of the Mask Eric Chevalier Rayman 2: The Great Escape Sony Playstation Honestly the whole Rayman 2 soundtrack is extremely evocative but we didn't have any boss themes here so...
Move Me Kohta Takahashi Ridge Racer Type 4 Sony Playstation Another Late 90s Namco banger, i'm so glad they included a video game with this album
Title Theme Tim Follin Solstice Nintendo Entertainment System How did Tim do this on an NES?
Simian Acres Graeme Norgate Blast Corps Nintendo 64 IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR COTTON EYE JOE, I'D BE MARRIED LONG TIME AGO, WHERE DID YOU COME FROM WHERE DID YOU GO, WHERE DID YOU COME FROM COTTON EYE JOE
Harmony Ian Taylor RuneScape PC The first of probably a couple of MMO tracks. Shame about the composer though. :|
Simple and Clean Hikaru Utada Kingdom Hearts Playstation 2 Okay so fun fact I never actually played Kingdom Hearts when it first came out but I wouldn't have even given it a chance if it weren't for my good friend Darklink22, so THIS ONE'S FOR YOU BUDDY. UPDATE 9/5/2023: So Darklink and I beat Kingdom Hearts while I was 2 edibles deep and needless to say I am fucking DEVASTATED how the fuck can you end a game like that I am SO UPSET
goldenslaughterer zts Umineko no Naku Koro Ni PC The fact that this is the track that plays when shit starts getting real in the first game and then things start going off the rails makes this an ABSOLUTELY Iconic track
The Final Stand HanStone Mabinogi PC God, what do I say about this track. The words are in my head but they're hard to commit to this sheet without a lot of context. I have a lot of complex feelings about Mabinogi. I'm not sure I like the current direction it's going, and I wish it wasn't so pay to win (it's a Nexon published game, what do you expect?). The Storyline Boss this is associated with has been nerfed into the ground, but its impact still resonates throughout the game to this day. It's a song I associate with putting everything on the line with two of your best friends to back you up. Things have changed, but the memories remain.
Agave Toshiya Yamanaka Sin and Punishment Nintendo 64 This is another instance where I wish I could put the whole soundtrack on this list but oh well. Haven't actually played this game but the entire soundtrack slaps.
Feel Our Pain ~ Fire Field Hidenori Shoji F-Zero GX Nintendo GameCube Little did we know that out of all the tracks in the F-Zero GX soundtrack, this is the one that would sound the most like the Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza) series that he'd be working on for the next 18 Years (With like, one or two breaks to go back and do some Super Monkey Ball Remakes)
Rambler Ayako Saso Technictix Sony Playstation 2 Actually recommended by the twitter account "Drum and Bass in Video Games" (RIP Twitter, you're basically dead), I've never actually played Technictix because I don't think it ever came over stateside, and I typically don't play rhythm games.
Devil Trigger Casey Edwards Devil May Cry 5 PC, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S Another Game I haven't played, but I really want to. I just cannot get enough of vocal tracks in character action games. (See also: Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengenace)
5:00 PM Kazumi Totaka Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nintendo Switch Overall the AC:NH soundtrack is kind of mid, but as is tradition for the Animal Crossing series, the 5:00 PM Music always fucks hard and thank GOD they let Totaka do this one (I still hold that the Gamecube Animal Crossing has the best soundtrack out of the entire series)
Girl in the Tower Mark Seibert King's Quest VI PC The slow Disney R&B Credits Track that Gamers deserve
Live and Learn Jun Senoue Sonic Adventure 2 Sega Dreamcast This is the hypest shit when you're 12 years old

Back to Tables.
